The @WeCops debate on Wednesday 30 June 2021 is focussing on the PFEW Elections, the work of Federation reps and how officers can get involved.
It will be hosted by PFEW National Chair John Apter tweeting as @PFEW_Chair and PFEW Board Member and National Wellbeing Secretary, Belinda Goodwin tweeting as @BelindaPfew
The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has been successfully representing officers and influencing the policing agenda for over 100 years.
We are the official body that exists to represent and support police officers on issues such as pay, allowances, terms and conditions, as well as advising and lobbying on operational policing issues, influencing legislation, providing training in issues such as equality, promotion, discipline and health and safety.
Our elections give members the opportunity to vote for the colleagues they want to represent them locally and nationally. Our representatives support and advise members in matters such as conduct, pay, allowances, terms and conditions, equality, professional development and operational policing issues.
As part of our organisational reform we worked with the Home Office to write new regulations to change the way the organisation is structured and how our elections are run - these new regulations became law on 31 December 2017. The new process provides a new rank-less structure; there are no longer separate rank committees at local or national level.
We hold elections for Fed reps every three years.
Our next election process begins on 1 July 2021 where nominations open for workplace representatives.

Meet your hosts:
PFEW National Chair John Apter
John is a constable who joined Hampshire Constabulary in December 1992. He is the first National Chair to be elected by the staff association’s members in August 2018 and is proud to be the voice of over 130,000 police officers in England and Wales. John works with 43 branch boards and PFEW’s National Board and National Council to represent, support and negotiate on behalf of our membership.
A regular on local and national media, John speaks passionately on issues important to our members, raising awareness of the demands and realities of day-to-day policing.
Fairness is what drives John and since being in office he has helped establish stronger relationships with government and police partners.
John works tirelessly to ensure officers are treated fairly and receive the support they deserve. He has relentlessly campaigned to ‘Protect The Protectors’, highlighting the reality of violence against police officers and staff, and creating the ‘Seven Point Plan’ to ensure officers and police staff assaulted at work, are treated as victims and given the support they fully deserve. This plan has now been adopted by almost every force across England and Wales including the Metropolitan Police, who have renamed it Operation Hampshire.
John was instrumental in helping to lay the foundations for PFEW’s ‘Protect the Protectors’ campaign that resulted in legislative change to impose tougher sentencing for those who assault an emergency service worker.
A former Hampshire Police Federation Chair and uniformed frontline officer working in response, roads policing and family liaison roles, John knows what’s important to the officers he represents. He regularly goes on patrol with forces throughout the country to hear first-hand what officers need from their staff association and to deliver on the promises he made as part of his manifesto.

Belinda has been an officer in the Met for nearly 20 years and became a Federation rep in 2013. She has represented officers who are going through the UPP process, who have been arrested and going through misconduct. She has challenged local decisions and worked on creating guidance for members in different areas.
Belinda was voted in on the Federations National Board in 2018 and is now one of the leads for wellbeing and the National Women’s Network. She loves being a Federation rep and continues to work as hard as she can for the benefit of the members.
When asked about what she loves about her job, Belinda said, “I love what I do, being able to represent over 133,000+ officers across England and Wales is a privilege and a job like no other. The best thing I have ever done is become a Federation Representative.”

How do I stand for election?
Any member wishing to stand for election can self-nominate via an online portal during the nomination period - a link will be provided to all members from MiVoice via their PNN email address at the appropriate time. You will need to fill in the online nomination form and sign the Standards and Performance agreement. You can self-nominate in all elections, there is no need to be nominated or seconded by another member.
Who can vote?
Any member, whether subscribing or not, can vote in their constituency so long as they were a member of the Federation two months before nominations open. Also, unless otherwise stated, you can vote in elections in which you are standing.
How do I vote?
Voting will be online during the voting period - a link will be provided to all members via their PNN email address at the appropriate time.
Myth Busting
I work part time therefore I cannot stand – FALSE, we have full time and part time reps.
I work in covert operations therefore I cannot become a rep – FALSE, we have reps from all disciplines as they help us better represent and support our members.
I am new to policing therefore I don’t have the experience to be a rep – FALSE, any PFEW member can stand to be a rep, no matter how long they have been in service, we need reps who represent our membership new recruits and old!
I don’t have experience in all the relevant areas to be able to inform members adequately therefore I am not suitable – FALSE, you do not need to be experience in every area, and training is given to all new reps to support them. You can then choose to specialise in a specific area for example, Conduct or Wellbeing.

@WeCops Well I always like the digs of we all go home at 4pm. Some of the most important stuff I did was in the middle of the night - either assisting colleagues during a post incident procedure or on occasions when a colleague had been arrested and taken to a custody suite. #wecops |

@WeCops For me assisting members during the misconduct process was extremely personal to me - I had fortunately been in the DPS so I had an advantage over most but I was keen to ensure that those I represented were treated fairly & in line with the regulations. #wecops |

They seldom see the Federation as theirs, but a block to their day job. We work hard locally to break down this barrier, so when they need help, they ask sooner. #wecops |

Don’t give up. |

It’s good to see engagement but engagement alone only goes so far. #wecops are angry and massively impacted. Trust me when I say most have next to no faith in the fed nationally. |

As in others can't see it so my disabilities don't exist. #wecops |

Referred to as antagonists, told to forget promotion unless you leave fed etc.. success should not automatically mean promotion. I love what I do & im good at it.. but it can have a personal cost if you want promotion #wecops |

Our skills as reps&what we deal with often outweigh what you find in the ‘operational’ workplace but they’re not recognised. Job misses out #wecops |
