#WeCops - Wednesday 30th November 2022 9pm (GMT Standard Time) The Service Improvement & Stress Reduction (SISR) Programme

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeCops using #WeCops

This chat is guest hosted by @AndyRhodes_OK @lizmead867

Background

The Home Office’s Front Line Review (FLR) highlighted the need for urgent action to ensure the police were fully supported and valued. A package of immediate measures was brought forward in response and the Government has continued to look for ways to do more to improve police wellbeing and to address these concerns.

The introduction of a Police Covenant is the next step to provide comprehensive, meaningful and lasting support to those working in policing. It will build on existing work to improve wellbeing and encourage enhancement of such support.

Within this remit, the NPWS has commenced the SISR Programme to identify and accelerate innovation and continuous improvement projects and reduce hindrance stressors across the policing landscape, to enhance workforce wellbeing and improve police service delivery.

The SISR Programme will focus on strategic solutions in areas such as demand management and harnessing technology and data solutions common place outside of policing.  The combination of technology, data and people provide a powerful lens through which we can narrow down the areas we can seek to improve.

Raising awareness and having confidence to utilise data and technological solutions by senior leaders in policing would contribute to an improved service for the public due to efficiency and effectiveness being improved. This would also lead to more effective procurement outcomes and the application of data and technology in policing.

Therefore, evidence suggests that this would be accompanied by less stress and fatigue in front line police officers, less failure demand, more intelligent commissioning of suppliers and better working with partners on service provision, both preventative and reactive.  These benefits combined would expect to have a positive effect on workforce wellbeing.

Q1. What would reduce your work-related demands/circumstances that tend to constrain or interfere with your day to day role? Please use the hashtag #WeCops https://t.co/uDRHX5DQ4l
@Police_Tebb
30 November 2022 21:01
@WeCops As a #response officer, having assistance or departments to handle time intensive paperwork or case files, allowing us to actually go out and deal with crime and the public. #WeCops

@WeCops Briefing up #WeCops
@_Danny__S
30 November 2022 21:04
@WeCops Bureaucracy in admin and linked to IT and technology. It is common for new leaders to change something that isn’t broken but a new IT system comes in when those who would use it ARENT spoken to or considered around how it works. These create unnecessary stress #wecops
@ChrisHWhiting
30 November 2022 21:05
@WeCops I think a redefinition of policings role in society needs to happen. On response at the moment we attend so many jobs and spend so many hours on watches where we shouldn't be the primary service. Often we attend jobs where we cannot provide meaningful help. Frustrating #WeCops
@ThinBlueMindUK
30 November 2022 21:05
@WeCops The organisation happy to work below the MOL. That will lead to a civil action which we believe tue organisation will be happy to live with. #wecops

@Julie_Brierley1 @WeCops Does that also include the pre-meeting meeting as well as the post-main meeting meeting? They are far too common #wecops
@SJBray83
30 November 2022 21:06
@lizmead867 @AnotherBobbie @WeCops Common response for investigators too - perhaps we should focus on the root of bureaucracy rather than add more resources to it. #wecops

@WeCops
30 November 2022 21:08
@maria_tvlns Do we have more meetings now thanks to Teams/zoom?? ?? #WeCops
@AndyRhodes_OK
30 November 2022 21:08
@_Danny__S @WeCops #WeCops hear this a lot and made similar mistakes as a CC - are you mainly talking about the big systems RMS from recording to case and custody / intel? Or other IT issues seeking to 'fix' a particular problem ?
@DannoReynolds

@WeCops And part two - what circumstances interfere or constrain my day to day role? #WeCops

@WeCops Politics wrongly interfering with police work, dealing with crime and taking up valuable resource. There are many things that are recorded as “non crime” for no actual purpose #WeCops
@lizmead867
30 November 2022 21:10
@SJBray83 @AnotherBobbie @WeCops There is evidence that bureaucratic barriers are a hindrance stressors .... along with poorly designed and time consuming processes and admin difficulties to achieve minor action! #Wecops
@DannoReynolds
30 November 2022 21:10
@WeCops Work related demands - well that is both external (calls for service and requests for policing etc) and internal (lets lump that as admin, management (of tasks) and performance related (measurements). #WeCops
@_Danny__S
30 November 2022 21:12
@AndyRhodes_OK @WeCops All. Just as an example We upgrade our mobiles at the start of the year. Recently updated some systems that aren’t compatible with the mobiles and means response officers can’t do all their work out on jobs. No fix for a year. Don’t even mention Windows 10 upgrades… #wecops

@WeCops Emails. More specifically, unnecessary, department wide emails. #WeCops
@ThinBlueMindUK
30 November 2022 21:12
@WeCops Finally a lack of purpose. Doing what is right. Policy trumps statue. Inexperienced leaders clinging g to policy unable to make a decision for fear of getting it wrong. #wecops
@SJBray83
30 November 2022 21:12
@lizmead867 @AnotherBobbie @WeCops Agree, Durham research has been telling us this for years along with others. Sometimes we forget the small wins that can have big impact when leaning or stripping outdated processes #wecops

@AnotherBobbie @ChrisHWhiting @WeCops #WeCops can't disagree although also no sign of these demands reducing (some forces have pushed back hard with other services re the Friday 430 call etc) - do we have enough evidence of this demand to argue our case tho? Given circa 50% of calls are logged rest is voice?
@_Danny__S

@SJBray83
30 November 2022 21:14
@themetskipper @WeCops Agree. Duplication of comms is a massive issue, in our efforts to ensure everyone is aware we flood all channels with the same info that means folks turn off from the detail as it gets lost in noise #wecops

@Police_Tebb
30 November 2022 21:15
@AndyRhodes_OK @ChrisHWhiting @WeCops I believe we are missing a lot with the lack of education of the public, and reinforcing what is actually needed/ expected and will be provided. We reinforce a lack of personal responsibility for one’s actions and life far too much #WeCops

30 November 2022 21:21
@DannoReynolds @WeCops As a new cop, I'm amazed about the disconnect between command and the frontlines, and the lack of trust of why things are being done from the bottom, and lack of communication of why they are being done from the top. Everything doesn't need explaining, but then rumours! #WeCops

@gashmark6
30 November 2022 21:22
@WeCops Less silos Less empires Less double clicking Less paperwork Why all forces don’t use one system - either niche or connect is beyond me…. No need to do (awful) PND. #wecops
@AndyRhodes_OK
30 November 2022 21:22
@WineDineAndLFC @WeCops #WeCops CDI - Watched NCRS come in (right idea) then convert incidents to crime thus raising expectations (can we see the wood for the trees now and how can tech / data help us prioritise and even manage public / victim expectations ?)
@lizmead867
30 November 2022 21:23
@AnotherBobbie @DannoReynolds @WeCops How would you like to see communication happen so there is less disconnect? #WeCops
@Police_Tebb
30 November 2022 21:23
@WeCops Allowing Cops to spend time with the public. There is a huge issue with ideas/ reinventing the wheel. Bottom down ideas seem to work, not always ideas for promotions boards #WeCops
@SJBray83
30 November 2022 21:23

@gashmark6
30 November 2022 21:23
@WeCops The problem with all forces is not that ideas are shared, but if they are from the ‘right person/rank’. The promotion process and ‘managing change’ rarely benefits the many - it benefits the person seeking promotion. Listen to the frontline as they know best #wecops

@lizmead867 @DannoReynolds @WeCops For nearly every Op/ Abstraction I've been on, I've not had any official info on why or what it is, and only fine out by luck or digging around. Simple briefing-style packs or emails would go a long way, and help reduce the grumbles. #WeCops

@AnotherBobbie @WeCops There is a fair challenge this that not all ideas or changes are simply for the sake of promotion and any large organisation will make changes and fail (even if we try) to explain the what, how and why to everyone. Change is constant. How we manage it matters a lot. #WeCops Q1

30 November 2022 21:28
@lizmead867 @AnotherBobbie @WeCops Done consistently and well and with the end user in mind at the start. Too often the comms bit comes at the end and is never enough to reach mass market. @gashmark6
30 November 2022 21:47
@WeCops Brutally put, too many people worry about technology. There has been a massive underinvestment in tackling high end online crime, however most crime /ASB remains the same and needs a very simple solution…. Boots on the ground. Policing is a simple job, keep it simple #wecops
